Being vulnerable
“perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love”-Rilke
Expressing our vulnerability in relationships can be incredibly difficult.
Our vulnerability acknowledges and accepts that we are, under our defences, feeling reduced or helpless, frightened and scared. We might feel lonely, confused, certain of rejection or anticipating humiliation or loss.
The uniqueness of the couple relationship is that it discloses everything about us that both limits and liberates our capacity to love and be loved in return. This can be the human in us both in great pain and in great pleasure. It can require growing our compassion for our own, and our partner’s suffering hearts.
In a couple relationship, if both partners are able to express both their vulnerability and compassion-their capacity to stay present with their partner’s difficult feelings and share- then this will, over time, create a deeper connection and love.
Expressing vulnerability, trusting your partner, having the capacity to be trusting, creating deeper connections-this is truly transformative love.
